Northwestern Redpoll?

This dark redpoll was seen at a feeder in Brønnøysund in northern Norway on February 15-16, 2011. It was so very different from the other redpolls in the area with its dark patterned brownish plumage which had us consider whether it could be a Nordthwestern Redpoll (Carduelis rostrata)?

Other photos of the same indivdual are here, here and here at Aarhusbirder. Any comments to the identification are more than welcome at this post or directly at kent_olsen@hotmail.com.

It was not seen associating the other redpolls in the area and feed by itself. Several hundred Mealy Redpolls were scrutinized in search of Arctic Redpoll and none came even close to this one with respect to plumage pattern.

Upperparts are rather brown than grey and heavily streaked. Flank streaking bold but diffuse. Undertail-coverts heavily streaked.

No pink tones on the rump.

Upperparts are rather brown than grey and heavily streaked.

Lacks pink or red on breast.

Strong bill with what appears to be a slightly convex upper culmen.
